As a young man, Samuel Clemens was to fulfill his ambition when he became a cub pilot on the river, travelling backwards and forwards from New Orleans to St. Louis under the tuition of the masterly Horace Bixby. In the later life, he returned to the scenes of his youth , this time as the famous author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, having taken as his-name one of the cries of the steamboatmen -- 'mark twain' or two fathoms.
The spirit of the great river flows through all of Twain's best work ad here the romantic heyday of steamboating on the mississippi is recalled in a characteristically nostalgic mixture of journalism and autobiography. Twain describes people and places with affection and humor. Of the Mississippi itself, that's 'strong brown god', 'Father of Waters', or 'Ol' Man River', he writes with respect and loving devotion.
