The method of progression, however, is new. I have made the sentence the basis throughout, and introduce the study of words, pharases, and clauses as and when it becomes natural and logical to do so.. The course is arranged in two stages : the first stage comprises a simple treatment of the elements of a simple sentence and of the part of speech, the second stage covers similiar ground in greater detail and passes on to the compound sentence and introduction to the complex sentence. there is, inevitably, a certain amount of repetition, but wherever this has been found necessary, I have intoduced sufficient variation in the treatment to avoid monotony, and I have made exercises more searching and difficult. In ths way Ihove I have provided for drving essential principles home thoroughly.
